Introduction
ADINET is a network
of libraries in and around Ahmedabad. ADINET was registered as a Society
in October 1994. It was initially sponsored by National Information System
for Science and Technology (NISSAT), Department of Scientific and Industrial
Research, Government of India.
ADINET aims to bring
about cooperative mode of working amongst the libraries and information
centers in and around Ahmedabad. The main objective of ADINET is to promote
sharing of resources and disseminate information among member libraries
by networking them and creating a centralized Union catalogue of their
holdings. It plans to coordinate efforts for suitable collection development
and reduce unnecessary duplication wherever possible. ADINET will not only
help library users but will be of help to individuals who practice different
professions in getting specialized information of their interest.
A centralized database
of periodicals and databases available in libraries of Ahmedabad is being
created by ADINET. Records collected from participating libraries are being
suitably formatted and merged to generate a Union Catalogue of Ahmedabad
libraries. With cooperation of participating libraries, these databases
are being regularly updated. At present this database includes only the
present/ current holdings of libraries.
Objectives
To bring about cooperative
mode of working amongst libraries and information centers in and around
Ahmedabad.
To integrate the economic,
scientific and technical information systems into an effective network
in and around Ahmedabad.
To facilitate and promote
sharing of resources amongst the libraries and information centres in and
around Ahmedabad by developing and maintaining a central on-line Union
Catalogue.
To coordinate with other
regional, national and international networks, libraries, information and
documentation centres for exchange of information and documents.
To offer technical guidance
to member libraries on selecting, storing, sharing and disseminating information.
To coordinate efforts
for suitable collection development and reduce unnecessary duplication
whenever possible.
To develop databases
of projects, specialists and institutions in and around Ahmedabad.
To create awareness
amongst all users' groups and to educate them in the utilisation of information.
To develop resources
and to propagate information in ways appropriate to the needs of users
in and around Ahmedabad.
To help library and
information centre users and also individuals who practice different professions
in getting specialized information of their interest.
Administration
The apex body of
ADINET is the Governing Council which is headed by a Chairman.
